Charles E. Hawley, DDS, PhD
Dr. Hawley is currently Clinical Professor, Department of Periodontology, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where he is engaged in didactic and clinical instruction in the post-graduate program in Periodontology. Dr.
Hawley retired from the Department of Periodontics, Dental School, University of Maryland in 2001. He served in the department as a full professor for 19 years where he at one time or another directed every educational program
the program offered to Pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students. He was Director of the Advanced Dental Education Program in Periodontics from 1996-2001. On his retirement from the University of Maryland, Dr. Hawley was
honored with the academic rank of Professor Emeritus.
Before becoming a faculty member at the University of Maryland, Dr. Hawley was a career dental officer in the U.S. Army Dental Corps with assignments at Walter Reed Army Hospital, West Point, Vietnam, and the U.S. Army
Institute for Dental Research. Dr. Hawley was the first Director of the U.S. Army Residency Program in Periodontics at Ft. Gordon, GA. He retired from the Dental Corps at the rank of Colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit.
Dr. Hawley received a Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University, his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania, a Certificate in Periodontics and a Masters degree from the University
of Illinois, and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Maryland. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. During his professional life, Dr. Hawley was elected to the International
College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
